Chelsea Brownstone Garden

Designed for the clients, owners of a bed & breakfast, and their out-of-town guests, this peaceful Chelsea back garden was envisioned as a private retreat from the urban landscape beyond. Spatially, the garden has been divided into two outdoor rooms, a front garden (for use by B&B guest) and a back garden (for use by the clients). In the front garden, existing natural cleft bluestone was recycled and used as a paver, while in the rear garden new, thermaled bluestone pavers were used.

The rear garden connects to the client’s private terrace off the townhouse’s parlor level and is used for outdoor dining. Two stucco columns, at the rear of the garden, create a backdrop for the garden’s raised plant bed and curved seatwall. Loose, informal plantings throughout the garden further heighten the sense of private, outdoor retreat. The custom cedar fence surrounding the property features staggered heights, revealing and concealing views where needed.
