Designed as a year-round country retreat, this garden emphasizes strong lines, a refined plant palette and extensive stonework. Upon entering the property, a cobblestone and bluestone entry sequence is highlighted by a large planting of three multi-stemmed specimen Birch trees underplanted with Ophiopogon grass. Set against a backdrop of fieldstone walls, which were designed to mitigate the steeply sloped site and connect the main house to the guest house, massings of Cherry Laurel and Dragon Lady Holly in the entry court further define this space. A series of stacked bluestone stairs off the entry court leads visitors to the main house. A large vegetable garden, fenced in to provide protection from the area’s deer population, showcases espaliered apple trees along the garden wall. In the rear of the property, a central axis through the greenhouse and rear bluestone terrace terminates at a sculpture.
