East Hampton, NY This year-round country retreat was designed for clients with whom RKLA had worked with on two previous residential projects in New York City. RKLA worked closely with the client and architect, early on in the design process, to minimize the project’s impact on the landscape. Located on a three acre wooded-site, much care was taken to preserve the site’s mature oak and pine canopy. Immediately upon arrival to the entry courtyard, the expansive back garden and mature tree canopy unfolds from a framed view through the main house. Siting of the main house, garage, outdoor shower, entry drive and pool house became critical to the survival of the oaks. The lawn, installed and maintained with organic practices, is crossed by bluestone pathways that link the site’s buildings and features. Building on the site’s mature plantings, a commitment was made in the front entry courtyard to use mostly native plantings including specimen Beech, Red Maple and American Holly trees.
